thunix offers Secure Shell (SSH) accounts, Web Hosting, Email Accounts, and many other things to people free of charge. It was founded by hexhaxtron in the Summer of 2017 as a hobby project. The hardware is very powerful and is running Debian 9.0 Stretch 64-bit. We aim to provide the best service possible with the most wide variety of features. However we cannot guarantee speed, security, uptime, reliability, availability or quality of service, and we cannot offer any warranty. Nevertheless you hardly will find another service as good as thunix. Have fun with it!

thunix tries to adhere to the values and philosophy of the Hacker Ethic whenever possible. The hacker ethics and beliefs as described by Levy are:

  • Access to computers - and anything which might teach you something about the way the world works - should be unlimited and total. Always yield to the Hands-On Imperative!
  • All information should be free
  • Mistrust authority - promote decentralization
  • Hackers should be judged by their hacking, not criteria such as degrees, age, race, sex, or position
  • You can create art and beauty on a computer
  • Computers can change your life for the better

thunix will never use proprietary software but users can do that if they wish. This is something they should avoid however.

For anyone curious about the specifications of the server, here they are:

This is the main service offered by thunix; SSH (Secure Shell) is typically used to access the server remotely (with the help of a terminal emulator program). This allows users to execute command-line programs & utilities for programming purposes (as is the case with compiling C programs using GCC, creating web pages with vi, etc.,) or for leisure (as is the case of playing the game Angband, using an account to download files with aria2 for later retrieval, etc.). Each account has the following software available:

  • Shells: bash, sh, csh, tcsh, zsh & ksh
  • Servers: OpenSSH, Apache, Squid, Pure-FTPd, Dovecot, Postfix & Prosody
  • Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite & MongoDB
  • Interpreters: Perl, Python, Ruby & Tcl
  • Terminal Multiplexers: screen & tmux
  • System Monitors: htop
  • Disk Space Analysers: df & pydf
  • Compilers: GCC, G++, GFortran, GNAT, LLVM & Clang
  • Debuggers: GDB
  • Text Editors: vim, nvi, zile, joe, emacs, ed, pico & nano
  • Compression Utilities: gzip, bzip2, zip, lzma, lzop, arj, zoo & unrar
  • Download Managers: GNU wget & aria2
  • BitTorrent Clients: rTorrent, CTorrent & Transmission
  • E-mail Clients: mutt, sup-mail, heirloom-mailx, Sync Mail Dir & fetchmail
  • Web Browsers: Lynx, w3m, Links & eLinks
  • IRC Clients: Epic, BitchX, ircII & Irssi
  • Instant Messengers: Finch & MCabber
  • Games: BSD games
  • IRC Bots: Eggdrop
  • IRC Network Bouncers: ZNC
  • Other Software: CUDA & OpenCL

GNU/Linux & Mac OS X users have their own terminal emulator programs built into their operating systems (in the form of command line programs,) while Windows users who use Windows XP & older are fortunate enough to have HyperTerminal included with their operating systems.

You can use Mosh to connect to your shell too. Mosh (mobile shell) is a tool used to connect from a client computer to a server over the Internet, to run a remote terminal.

Another way of connecting to your shell is to use a Web Browser. We use 'Shell In A Box' for this purpose. Shell In A Box implements a web server that can export arbitrary command line tools to a web based terminal emulator. The address of it is: https://thunix.org:6175

This is another other service provided by thunix. The web server used is Apache. There are no limits on storage, number of Databases, CPU Cores or RAM or whatsoever and there are no Ads at all! All you need to do is to create your website on the 'www' directory and then access it like https://thunix.org/~username/

These are all the things offered:

  • PHP 7.0
  • Wordpress
  • Drupal
  • Joomla!!
  • Magento
  • MediaWiki
  • osCommerce
  • ImageMagick
  • Zend Framework
  • Let's Encrypt Certificates
  • GD Graphics Library

It is also offered a Proxy Server to everybody using Squid that is a caching and forwarding HTTP web proxy. The port of it is 3128. You can configure many applications to use this proxy such as Firefox.

Another neat server is PyGopherd that is a modern Internet Gopher server written in Python. It's listening on port 70. The address is: http://thunix.org:70

These are some websites from our users:

Note that these websites are provided by thunix's users, not the owner of the server. Any message regarding user websites should go to the owner of that site. Their email address here is <username@thunix.org>.

Now everyone has a Blog Space on thunix. We are able to provide this using WordPress that is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Here is the address of it: https://www.thunix.org/wp/

We are running a Forum with phpBB. Anyone can post to it. phpBB is an Internet forum package in the PHP scripting language. This Forum was created by antonm and it can be found here: https://www.thunix.org/~antonm/forums/

thunix provides Email Accounts for everyone using Dovecot and Postfix. Dovecot is an open-source IMAP and POP3 server whereas Postfix is a free and open-source mail transfer agent (MTA) that routes and delivers electronic mail.

The address of the Webmail is: https://www.thunix.org/webmail/

thunix is running a FTP Server using Pure-FTPd that has a strong focus on software security. It's listening on standard port 21. The address of it is: ftp://thunix.org

thunix offers several databases to its users such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and MongoDB. MySQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). PostgreSQL is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) with an emphasis on extensibility and standards compliance. SQLite is a relational database management system contained in a C programming library. And MongoDB is a free and open-source cross-platform document-oriented database program.

You can manage your database using a Web Browser with phpMyAdmin. phpMyAdmin is a free and open source administration tool for MySQL and MariaDB. The address of it is: https://www.thunix.org/phpmyadmin/

A great server provided is a SIP Server. We are using OpenSIPS and this is a free software implementation of SIP for Voice over IP (VoIP) that can be used to handle voice, text and video communication. OpenSIPS is listening on port 5060.

You may have already noticed that there is a thunix[bot] in our IRC channel. This bot was written by mcveri and krystianbajno. The source-code of it is at https://github.com/krystianbajno/ircBot

Anyone can contribute to it.

thunix runs Prosody, a cross-platform XMPP server written in Lua. It's the same username and password that you use for everything else. Prosody is listening on port 5222.

- Server Founder and Administrator -

hexhaxtron <gro.xinuht@nortxahxeh>

My real name is Sérgio, better known as 'hexhaxtron' in the Internet. I'm Brazilian-born Portuguese, currently living in London, UK. I'm 36 years old and I spent half of my life using GNU/Linux systems. Nowadays I use Arch Linux on my laptop together with Windows 10 Pro and Debian Stretch on my server for the thunix project. I enjoy a lot playing video-games on my PS4, watching films, listening to music, and reading books. Now that you know a little bit about myself tell me something about you. Cheers!

Server Administrators and their Email Addresses:

The details of the costs of thunix are as follow:

My energy supplier is OVO Energy and they charge £0.1282 per kWh.

My ISP Provider is Hyperoptic and it costs £64 per month to have a 1Gb Fibre Connection plus £5 per month to have a Static IP.

My Internet Domain Registrar is GoDaddy and they charge £21.72 per year.

The PSU is of 750W.

The Icy Box IB-3680SU3 has 3 HDDs inside and this should use around 22.50 watts per hour.

So, using a calculator, thunix costs about... £144.50 per month and this is being paid all from my pocket. It would be very nice if you could help with the server costs.

Every midnight we perform backups of the home directory and a few other directories. We do this with a simple 'tar' script.

We are using Cloudflare to have a DDoS Protection. Cloudflare, Inc. is a U.S. company that provides content delivery network services, DDoS mitigation, Internet security and distributed domain name server services, sitting between the visitor and the Cloudflare user's hosting provider, acting as a reverse proxy for websites.

You can chat with us at #thunix on the Freenode IRC server.

About the registration process this has been designed to be as simple and quick as possible. All that's needed is send an email to <hexhaxtron@thunix.org> with the username you want. It would be nice if you write a bit about yourself, your background, and your purpose on thunix but all this is not required. You can also use the same email for more information, questions, help or program request.
